Resources

Slideshow: goals and budgeting

Lesson step-by-step

1. Slideshow — 30 minutes

Show the slideshow in class to show students how to create S.M.A.R.T. goals and a budget. Encourage students to provide their own examples of “bad” and “better” goals during each slide. Encourage students, also, to come up with other upfront and ongoing costs that might be relevant to developing a website.

2. Group development of goals — 45 minutes

Split students into groups and have them develop S.M.A.R.T. goals addressing each of the following issues for the website.

  • What are the expectations for the number/types of stories that appear on the site?
  • What are the expectations for multimedia (photos, videos, etc.) that appear on the site?
  • How will social media be used to increase traffic back to stories?
  • What ways can you help get reader/audience feedback?
  • What is the role of advertising on the site?
  • What marketing/branding strategies will be used to promote the site?

3. Group development of budget — 45 minutes

Using the same groups, have students take the goals they developed and research both upfront and ongoing budget costs. Once finished, each group should turn in both the goals and the finished budget.
