While there are thousands of strategies to use for vocabulary instruction, we have curated six options that will work with every unit in this curriculum. English Learners do well with language usage in repeated activities, so re-using strategies is an additional support to promote language use. Even though each unit has many words, we hope you remember that with your students who are learning English as an Additional Language, memorization isn’t as important as selecting the terms you feel are most important within your classroom. Each strategy below has directions, support materials for each unit, and general instructions for use. Note that while these resources were designed with English Learners in mind, they are also suitable for native English speakers given that journalism-specific vocabulary is generally new to all learners.
