Description
This is a lesson in which students will apply their understanding of x- and y- coordinates and width and height to align and place components in a logo. Students will apply their knowledge to shapes and components on a quiz. Then they will create a staff logo using pixels, points and picas. In creating a new composition, they will use the x- and y- coordinates and predetermined width and height to set the margins, line up components and build proportional design.
Objectives
- Students will apply knowledge of coordinates and measurements to create a new product.
- Students will evaluate a self-created product for precision and alignment of components.

Lesson step-by-step
1. Review — 5 minutes
Conduct a brief review from the previous lesson about points and picas, x- and y- coordinates and width and height as an informal check for understanding.
2. Quiz — 25 minutes
Administer Quiz 1.3: Coordinates and Dimensions, which requires students to apply knowledge of coordinates, measurements and dimensions to scenarios.
3. Guided/independent/group practice — 60 minutes
Students will work in groups or individually (teacher’s choice) to create a class logo or a staff logo. The staff logo should include the following:
- School colors
- School logo or icon
- School year
- Publication or class name
- Creative design or graphic
Students can use software or graphic design paper to create the logo. For the purpose of this assignment, issue logo dimensions for consistency, or provide a minimum and maximum size range. (Students will revise their logos later after learning about principles of design, color and typography. The purpose of this lesson is merely to create something with elements aligned and aesthetically placed.)
4. Closure — 5 minutes
Students will turn in completed logos at the end of class. Consider sharing a few of them before class ends to showcase student work.
